Helen Effhauser, 90, of East Grand Forks went home to God on November 27, 2025 surrounded by family in her home.
Born Helen Nettie Slominski on March 27, 1935 in Warsaw, ND to William and Mary (Ginter) Slominski. She along with her 10 siblings were raised on a farm near Minto, ND and remained close their entire lives.
Helen, who had a love of history and teaching, went to a country school for all her grade school education and fourth grade at the Warsaw Convent to receive her First Holy Communion. She then spent her four high school years at St. James Academy; attended Mayville State Teacher’s College for two years where she received her teaching degree. She taught all 8 grades full time at the rural country school near Minto, then at Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s, and St. Michaels part-time. Education was very important to Helen and she taught life lessons to those willing to pay attention.
Helen was united in marriage to Louis “Junie” Effhauser on January 4, 1955 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. After marriage, Helen and Junie built their home on the Point in East Grand Forks in 1956. Helen greatly enjoyed her car trips with Junie which remained some of her favorite memories.
She will be remembered by her family and countless others for her gentle nature, generosity, and delicious Grandma Helen bars.
Helen is survived by her loving children; Cheryl Effhauser and Michael (Denise) Effhauser; grandchildren Jill (Joshua) Muro, Amy (Shawn) Bartlette, and Matthew (Sarah) Effhauser; great-grandchildren Bella, Greta, Hank, Gemma, Gus, and Rex (Effhauser); Elijah, Eva, Eden and Elliott (Muro); Peyton, Macey and Hattie (Bartlette); siblings Theresa Gerszewski and Dennis Slominski; many beloved nieces and nephews and all others outside the family that still knew her as “Grandma Helen”.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents William and Mary, husband Louis “Junie,” brothers Stanley, Walter, Steve, and Louie; and sisters Aurelia, Bebe Ann, and Margaret.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2025, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, MN.
Visitation:  4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 4,2025, with a 4:30 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary and 6:30 p.m. Vigil Service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Friday.
Burial:  Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, MN.
